What do you get if you cross a door and a fence? A doonce? A fenor? No, you fools! You get the incredibly handy, and incredibly customizable fence gate – which also happens to be our block of the month. What do you mean a fence gate isn’t a block? It’s my column, and my rules! Now get out of my office.

Ok ok, come back into the office again because there’s more that I want to say about fence gates. Quite a lot more. The first thing is that fence gates were implemented based on player feedback – a chap named Ben Maclaren requested them on Mojang’s old support site. The idea collected more than 5,000 votes before being brought into the game in the Adventure Update in September 2011.

Fence gates are pretty easy to build – you’ll need four sticks and two planks of any kind of wood. Put them in a crafting grid with the planks in the centre and the sticks on the sides, and you’ll get yourself a gate. Choose the type of wood with care, though, because it’ll determine the color of the gate you end up with – from dark oak to pink cherry or pale oak.
合成栅栏门相当简单——你需要四根木棍和两块任意种类的木板。将它们按这样的布局摆放在工作台中：木板居中，木棍分别摆在两侧，就可以合成栅栏门。惟需注意最终成品的颜色取决于木材种类的选择——从深色橡木到粉红樱花木，或是浅色橡木都能合成栅栏门。
Once crafted, place your gate down on the ground somewhere. The use button will open and close it, but you can also control a gate with redstone power or with a wind charge. Fence gates can also be used as fuel in furnaces, and under note blocks to get a “bass” sound. Neat!
合成出来后，将栅栏门放置在地面任意位置。按使用键即可开启或关闭它，亦可利用红石信号或风弹来控制栅栏门。栅栏门还能用作熔炉的燃料，放置于音符盒下方可发出“低音”效果。多妙啊！
As I noted when I wrote about fences a few years ago, “fens” is a 14th-century word meaning “protection” which is also where the word “defence” originates. I would probably bet that fence gates are more or less as old as fences, but for some reason no-one has yet written a comprehensive history of fence gates, so there’s a gap in the market for all you aspiring historians.

Fences and other similar barriers are mostly used to keep animals or people contained in a specific place, which means that gates in those fences are sometimes seen as a symbol of freedom. However, in places where those gates are rarely opened, or where only certain people are allowed through, they can be a tool of oppression.
栅栏和其他类似的屏障主要用于将动物或人限制在特定区域内，这使得栅栏上的门有时被视为自由的象征。然而，在那些门很少打开，或者只为特定的人打开的地方，它们也可能成为压迫的工具。
Minecraft’s sheep aren’t sentient (yet), so you don’t need to worry about oppressing them – feel free to erect as many fence gates as you need to. Just try not to leave them open by accident, or those sheep might make a dash for freedom...
