Black, white, and cute all over

In the bamboo jungles of the Overworld, you’ll occasionally happen across an extraordinary creature. Clad in black and white fur, munching on a bamboo stalk, and sometimes lying flat on its back, our mob of the month this week is the panda. Atchoo!
在主世界的竹林里，你偶然能遇见某种奇特的生物。为黑白相间的毛发所覆盖，嚼着竹竿，偶尔四脚朝天地躺着，它就是我们这周揭晓的本月生物：熊猫。阿嚏！
Pandas first began appearing in the Java release of Village & Pillage update, in April 2019. This update added pillagers and lots of new types of village, as the name suggests, but it also added foxes, sweet berries, and the bamboo jungles that the pandas call their home. Atchoo!
熊猫最开始于2019年4月在Java版发布的村庄与掠夺更新中出现。字如其名，本次更新加入了灾厄村民以及其他许多种类的村民，但同时也加入了狐狸，甜浆果，以及被熊猫们称呼为“家”的竹林。阿嚏！
Pandas may appear to be simple creatures, lying around all day. But you’ll find surprising complexity once you spend a while studying them. Mojang’s animal behaviorists believe that there are a total of seven different kinds of panda in the game, many of which have different personalities. *sniff sniff*

There are worried pandas, for example, that avoid players and hide during thunderstorms. There are aggressive pandas that love a fight. There are playful pandas that roll around – sometimes off cliffs. There are lazy pandas that spend most of their time lying on their back. There are weak pandas with little health. And there are pandas with brown fur, instead of black. Atchoo!

You can breed pandas together with bamboo – but they’re a bit pickier than other animals. They’ll only produce a baby if there are bamboo plants nearby. Those babies will inherit some of the personality of their parents, but which one depends on a bunch of genetics that seem way too complicated for me to understand. Atchoo!
你可以用竹子繁殖熊猫 – 但它们比其他动物更为挑剔。它们在竹子周围只会产出一个幼年熊猫。这些幼年熊猫会继承其父母的部分性格，但这种特征遵循生物学遗传，复杂得我也搞不懂。阿嚏！
Sorry about all the sneezing. I’m trying to befriend a group of baby pandas, who also love to sneeze. Very occasionally, a sneezing baby panda will drop a slimeball. Yuck.

Fun fact: to create the sounds for Minecraft’s pandas, Mojang sound designer Samuel Åberg flew halfway across the world to China to record them in person. Rather than hunting them down in the jungle, though, Samuel went to Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou – where they were rather easier to find.

Why? Well, there are only a couple of thousand giant pandas remaining in the wild. As a result of farming, deforestation, and humans generally being humans, the panda has been pushed out of the lowland areas where it once lived and into mountainous regions instead.

Luckily, Chinese conservationists have been taking care of these gentle giants, which to many are a national symbol of the country. The area where pandas live has been designated as a national park and the population seems to be slowly rising again. With luck, perhaps in time you’ll see more of these magnificent creatures in the bamboo jungles of the Overworld too.
幸运的是，中国的动物保护组织一直在保护这些温和的大个头。对许多人来说，大熊猫也是整个国家的一大象征。大熊猫所生活的地区已被指定为国家公园，其数量也在缓慢回升。运气好的话，也许某天，你会在主世界的竹林中看到更多这些令人赞叹的生物。
