Fire is something you normally want to avoid in Minecraft. It’s hot, it hurts, and it spreads alarmingly rapidly through wooden structures and forests. But sometimes there are situations when you need it – like when lighting a campfire, or the candles on a cake. It’s those very times when you’ll be glad you crafted our item of the month – the flint and steel.

Flint and steel is old in Minecraft terms – it was released in January 2010, in the same patch that added pickaxes, axes and bows. Originally they were the main tool used to smelt ores and cook food, but about a month later furnaces were added to the game instead, and flint and steel’s role was demoted to just setting things on fire.
打火石在《我的世界》中算是比较古老的物品了——它们是在2010年1月时加入的，与添加镐子、斧头和弓箭的补丁同时发布。它们最初主要是用来冶炼矿石和烹饪食物的，但在大约一个月后，熔炉加入到了游戏中，打火石就降格到了只是用来点燃东西的作用。

Getting yourself a flint and steel is easy. Get some flint and some steel iron, and pop them in a crafting grid together. Because the recipe only has two ingredients, you won’t need a 3x3 crafting bench – you can just use the crafting grid in your inventory.
获得打火石并不难。找到一些燧石和铁锭，然后把它们放在同一个工作台里合成。由于这个配方只需要两种材料，所以你并不需要一个3x3的工作台——你只需使用背包里的合成功能即可。
Got one? Great! Hold it in your hand and hit the use button on another block nearby – preferably not a wooden block that forms part of your house, because it’ll catch fire. If there’s another block that’s flammable nearby then the fire will spread and... well... let’s just say that’s why we no longer have the Great Library of Alexandria.

Flint and steel can be used to light campfires, candles, and cakes with candles. It can also light nether portals (so bring a flint and steel to the Nether in case your portal gets extinguished for some reason), and will ignite TNT.
打火石可以用来点燃篝火、蜡烛和带有蜡烛的蛋糕。它还可以对下界传送门框点燃以激活（以防你的下界传送门因种种原因而熄灭，请在进入下界时带上一个打火石），并且能引爆TNT。
As you use it, its durability will decrease – but like any tool it can be refreshed by combining it in a crafting grid with another damaged tool. If you really want your flint and steel to last, it can be enchanted with Unbreaking or Mending.
随着使用次数的增加，它的耐久度会随之减少——但它能够像任何工具一样，通过将它与其他损坏的工具组合在同一个工作台中来修复。如果你想让你的打火石更耐用，可以对其进行附魔，如附上“耐久”或“经验修补修补”。

Flint and steel is named after the real-world tool that has been used since the iron age for lighting fires. You use the sharp edge of a flint to shave off tiny particles of metal, which then catch fire in the air as sparks. These sparks can then be used to ignite flammable material known as tinder.
打火石是以一种自铁器时代以来一直用于生火的工具命名的。用燧石的锋利边缘削下微小的金属颗粒会在空气中被火花点燃。这些火花可以用来点燃一种叫做火绒的易燃物。
This way of starting fires was very common in Europe from ancient times all the way through to when the friction match was invented in the early 1800s. But it’s not the only way to start a fire. In south-eastern Asia, a device called a “fire piston” can ignite tinder by rapidly compressing a gas so it gets very hot.
在欧洲，这种打火方式从古代一直到19世纪初火柴发明之前都非常常见。但这并不是唯一一种的打火方法。在东南亚，有一种名为“火塞”的东西，通过快速压缩气体使其变得非常热，从而点燃柴火。
Oh, and in case you’re thinking that Minecraft is being historically inaccurate by substituting iron for steel, you can actually start fires with iron – and in fact this was very common before steel was invented, it just doesn’t work quite as well.
