Our first Minecraft game drop of 2025 is edging closer, and you know what that means – more features going into testing! Strewn like confetti across biomes, your next expedition might entail meeting two moo-some cow variants, spotting dancing firefly particles glimmering in the dark, hearing howling wind and other ambient desert sounds, or picking up a lush new plant block: the bush.

Two moo-some cow variants are joining the herd! I tried to get an interview with an original cow to see if they felt camaraderie or perhaps if they were worried about more cows moo-ving in on their territory? Their only response was “moo”, which I'm told means “speak to my agent”. Until we get hold of them, let’s turn our attention to the cold cow and the warm cow instead!

Coated in fluffy fur, our cold cow brings cozy with them wherever they go – which is lucky, since it’s picked the snow-swept chilly biomes as its home. Our auburn warm cow can instead be found kicking up dust in the sandy biomes.

If you share my fear of the dark, I'll hold your hand as I say this: staying up past dusk will be a must going forward. In fact, you’ll be so hypnotized by the new firefly bush, you’ll forget about all the hostile mobs sneaking up behind you! Eh, anyways. This new plant block spawns dancing firefly particles that – listen to this – glow in the dark. As if that wasn’t enough, you can bury the firefly bush below other blocks to make them sparkle! Trek to swamps and bodies of water (during the day, obviously) to retrieve the firefly bush, and then you can use bone meal to grow more in the safety of your own home.

Next time you’re surfing the dunes of the desert biomes, husks and warm cows won’t be the only things heard stirring in the sandbanks. Listen out for whispers of sand and other new ambient desert sounds coming from clusters of sand and terracotta blocks. The dead bush will also carry the chirping of crickets, rustling twigs, and howling winds as you journey across this expansive terrain.

You can also bring the soothing sounds of the deserts to your own builds by placing the dead bush on two sand blocks outside, or by clustering several sand or terracotta blocks together.

As somebody who lacks green fingers in real life, I welcome any new lush plant block with open arms. Our latest tuft of greenery is the bush which can be found sprouting in forests, birch forests, plains, windswept hills, and other green biomes. Once you get your hands on one, you can grow more bushes yourself using bone meal.

You can test these features by enabling snapshots for Minecraft: Java Edition. To install a snapshot, open up the Minecraft Launcher and enable snapshots in the "Installations" tab.
